NBCC Brexit Forum 29 March 2018

 

On March 29, exactly one year before the United Kingdom will leave the European Union, more than 500 key stakeholders joined the 15th edition of the NBCC Brexit Forum at the World Forum in The Hague. This event was organised by the Netherlands British Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Dutch Government and VNO-NCW.

A strong representation of Anglo-Dutch companies and entrepreneurs including Unilever, KLM, FrieslandCampina, Rabobank, Shell, ABN AMRO, Lloyds Banking Group, BP, Allen & Overy, RELX Group and MHA MacIntyre Hudson were present.  

During the event, moderated by Rem Korteweg from the Clingendael Institute, her Excellency Mrs Sigrid Kaag shared her vision on Brexit: “Trade between the UK and the EU will never be the same again, it is our common task to prepare well for this new reality and limit the impact as much as we can.”  The Minister urged us to prepare and introduced the Brexit Impact Scan and Brexit vouchers – valuable tools for your Brexit preparations. Minister Kaag added: “Post Brexit, the Netherlands should aim to be the number-one trading channel to and from the UK, linking the UK with the rest of Europe.” Mr Hans de Boer, President VNO-NCW warned that there is still a chance on a chaotic Brexit. Mr Niclas Mårtenson, CEO Stena Line, provided us with insights on Brexit and its challenges from a short sea shipping perspective. He was the first business leader to really underline how seamless digital policy post-Brexit will be key for his company to thrive “No physical border, virtual borders at best”. Mr Van Boxmeer, CEO Heineken NV, underscored the importance of being fully prepared and that he trusts our political leaders to do the right thing.

The Expert Session, also moderated by Rem Korteweg, included Lauwrens de Jong – Henneken Removals, Harry Brockhoff – Dutch Flower Group, Jurgen van Der Meer - Clifford Chance, Marieke-Kees van der Zwet – PWC, and Leon Kanters – KPMG Meijburg & Co. It provided many new insights and practical advice by our esteemed experts from different perspectives, specialities and scale have provided you with inspiration for your preparations in the year to come.

The closing reception and Walk-in hour proved to be the perfect setting for an informal exchange of knowledge, ideas and inspiration.
